PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting directly to the Head of Programming, this role is responsible for the end-to-end Executive Producing of major projects as assigned, defined by either scale or complexity.

The Executive Producer will also play a pivotal role within the Programming team at Carriageworks, along with the Head of Programming to coordinate, plan, and deliver the Carriageworks Presents program. This multifaceted position is integral to Carriageworks’ mission of presenting innovative, diverse, and inclusive contemporary arts experiences.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Executive Producer at Carriageworks, your key responsibilities will include:

Strategic Program Development and Delivery

Working closely with the Head of Programming, contribute to the development, execution, and overall artistic direction of Carriageworks Presents. This involves:

  • Executive Producing diverse performances that reflect and engage with Sydney’s rich cultural landscape.
  • Participating in senior programming discussions to shape the partnership-focused program across disciplines, cultures, and communities.
  • Conducting research and providing suggestions on key programming areas to inform decision-making.
  • Support the Head of Programming to draft and negotiate contracts.
  • When required, contribute to the development and acquittal of grants and proposals to secure funding and/or investment to support the Carriageworks Presents programming budget.
  • When required, represent Carriageworks at external events and the broader arts community, contributing to the organisation’s reputation as a leading contemporary arts precinct nationally and internationally.
  • Provide senior leadership and problem-solving expertise as needed during critical situations with artists, organisations, and stakeholders.

Executive Producing

Oversee the planning and delivery of assigned projects, including:

  • End-to-end Executive Producing of major initiatives that require senior leadership due to their scale or complexity.
  • Ensuring all program requirements are met to the highest standard, working with Carriageworks’ production and technical teams.
  • Maintain strong relationships with artists, companies, and cultural organisations to ensure a vibrant and innovative program.

Financial Oversight

Work collaboratively with the Head of Programming in comprehensive budget management for the Programming department.

  • Provide accurate and timely cost estimates for new productions during scoping phases and assist in ongoing P&L management and reporting to meet company-wide objectives.
  • With the Head of Programming, maintain detailed oversight of individual production budgets and financial performance.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Programming and the Finance team to ensure fiscal responsibility and program sustainability across all Carriageworks Presents activities.

 

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA 

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or extensive experience in performance. 
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience developing and delivering a high-quality performance program. 
  • Strong understanding of international, national and local work in performance and contemporary programming supported by active professional networks. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to the development of contemporary multi-art practices in Australia. 
  • Demonstrated project management experience. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and written and verbal communication, including influencing, advocacy and negotiation. 
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including the capacity to work evenings and weekends.
