Casual Gallery Assistant (Exhibitions)

Job No: CN4316   Location: Newcastle

As we transform and expand Newcastle Art Gallery, an exciting opportunity exists to join our evolving team as a casual Gallery Assistant (Exhibitions). This is a hands-on role, working on the Gallery floor and in the back of house technical, collection, preparation, and storage areas.

As our Gallery Assistant (Exhibitions), you will support the preparation, installation and deinstallation of temporary exhibitions and long-term collection displays across a diverse range of art mediums, ensuring works of art are displayed to the highest standards and treated with utmost care.

The role will undertake preparation of galleries, equipment, furniture, and artworks for display, transportation, and storage. These physically active duties may include manual tasks, lifting and moving loads, and using tools and equipment in line with defined safe work instructions. As such, experience with handling and installing works of art is essential. Additional knowledge in specialist areas of installation, such as lighting systems, technical and audio-visual equipment, or rigging may be advantageous.

From time to time, this role may be asked to support other areas of gallery operations including public program delivery and visitor experience.

Please note that additional casual Gallery Assistant roles that support the Gallery’s program of events and customer service will be recruited later in 2025, as Gallery Assistant (Audience) and Gallery Assistant (Operations).
