Set in the golden age of Hollywood, City of Angels follows Stine, a crime novelist trying to adapt his own book for the screen without losing his soul in the process. Running parallel is the story of his fictional creation, hardboiled private eye Stone, navigating a city crawling with criminals and opportunists.
The production’s most striking device is its split stage: Stine’s world plays out in full colour while Stone’s exists entirely in black and white, blurring the line between author and character as both men fight to stay true to themselves.
With Cy Coleman’s jazz-infused score, Chandler-sharp wit, and the glitzy spectacle of classic Hollywood, this is musical theatre with real bite.
Directed by Head of Musical Theatre and Broadway choreographer Kathryn Dunn, City of Angels is performed by The McDonald College’s senior Musical Theatre students, representing some of the most promising young performing arts talent in Australia.
