NIGHT RISE is a new Fremantle Biennale initiative bringing together contemporary art experiences, artists and cultural leaders with the dark sky places, stories and communities of Western Australia.
Wheatbelt Observatories is the first Night Rise project. Following extensive consultation across the Wheatbelt, Fremantle Biennale is seeking Expressions of Interest from contemporary artists and architects to imagine singular observatories and built forms across five selected sites.
Combining permanent and temporary works, the observatories will form a constellation and landmark dark sky trail, activated by the Biennale in collaboration with each community through public programs, seasonal gatherings, storytelling, performances and other cultural experiences.
We are looking for ambitious, site-responsive ideas that explore the observatory as a place to gather, shelter, look, listen and connect with the sky and horizon. Artist and architect collaborations are strongly encouraged.
We welcome applications from emerging and established artists, architects and practices.
Selected applicants will progress to a Research & Development phase and receive a Design Fee of AUD $10,000 (ex GST), with a travel stipend also available. The overall project budget for each observatory is estimated at AUD $300,000, inclusive of fees, permits and construction.
