Rosie Flores at Brunswick Music Festival

BRUNSWICK MUSIC FESTIVAL: Rosie Flores is a rockabilly and country music artist of Mexican American heritage. Her music blends rockabilly, honky tonk, jazz, and Western swing along with traditional influences from her Tex-Mex heritage. She currently resides in Austin, Texas, where August 31 was declared Rosie Flores Day by the Austin City Council in 2006.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
The person and artist I am today
2. When did you know you would work in the arts?
Starting in grade school
3. How would you describe your work to a complete stranger?
Guitarist, Singer songwriter, Painter, and a Story teller
4. How hard is it to be authentic in the arts nowadays?
I don’t try to be like anyone else, I’ve always tried to keep it real
5. Is there a mission to your work?
Not really, I’m in it for the fun, hope to make people happy
6. What’s your background – are there studies that prepare you for this?
Of course, I’ve studied everything I do and keep studying
7. What’s the first thing career related you usually do each day?
Eat well, work out and read the news and then write till the phone rings
8. Can you describe an “average” working day for you?
Ck Emails, advance shows, return calls, filing, practice guitar, write some more
9. What else do you do to pay the bills?
Besides performing, earning royalties, nothing
10. What’s the one thing – piece of equipment, toy, security blanket, – you can’t work without?

11. What gets you fired up?
A strong cup of black coffee
12. Who in the industry most inspires you?
Lucinda Williams, Jeff Beck, Wanda Jackson, Mick Jagger
13. What in the industry do you despair about?
Royalties being stolen from songwriters via the internet
14. What is the best thing about your job?
I get paid to make stuff up and act like a teenager on stage
15. What’s the worst?
I don’t get paid to do administrative work (yuk)
16. What are the top three skills you need in this industry?
Early rising, studying my craft and keeping positive people around me
17. What advice would you give anyone looking to break into the field?
Make good friends, stay honest and never give up
18. How do you know when you missed the mark?
When the dart hits the floor

All of the above because there is no one answer to how I view my complicated career
