Satanalia gives a deep, dark twist to the Roman winter festival they called Saturnalia in honour of their god Saturn. The celebrations started with a sacrifice and a feast followed by gift-giving and riotous partying in a carnal carnival of reversals of all social conventions. The poet Catallus called it ‘the best of days.’ You can see where this is going with Satanalia.
