The New York-based conceptual artist was aged 81 and was preparing for a major retrospective exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York entitled Silence and scheduled for February 2015.

Born on 2 January 1933, Kawara grew up in Kariya in Japan and moved to New York in 1965. His most famous works were concerned with time and space in relation to human existence. His famed Today series consists of a long series of ‘date paintings’ displaying only the date of creation, in simple white lettering set against a solid background in Liquitex on canvas.
