Claudio Abbado, whose remarkable career as a conductor took him to most of the world’s great opera houses and orchestras, died on Monday, aged 80.

Abbado, who decided to become a conductor after hearing a concert at Milan’s La Scala at the age of eight, was renowned for his gentle nature – a far cry from the fiery clichés often associated with conductors.
