Established in the early 1980s under the Cain Government, and after much lobbying from the local arts community, Melbourne’s contemporary arts space ACCA has been a defining institution for thirty years. With its origins in a 19th century gardener’s cottage in the Botanic Gardens, it has become an iconic force today – both for its imposing building and its flexibility for exhibitions, and a vision that has been led by Juliana Engberg, curator of this year’s 19th Biennale of Sydney, in recent years.
