Indigenous artists and new commissions take centre-stage in Creative Director Josephine Ridge’s inaugural festival program.

Formerly the co-CEO and Executive Director of the Sydney Festival, Ridge’s first Melbourne Festival is notable for its strong commitment to Indigenous culture, including the opening weekend event Tanderrum, a Welcome to Country in Federation Square directed by Ilbijerri Theatre’s Rachel Maza; Gurrumul – His Life and Music, a concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl featuring Gurrumul and special guests, backed by the Philharmonia Australia; Malthouse Theatre’s The Shadow King, an adaptation of King Lear starring Tom E. Lewis (The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith) and Jimi Bani (Mabo); and a free concert featuring Archie Roach, Into the Bloodstream.
