This month five diverse groups of performance artists are in Brisbane developing ideas, playing and engaging in new collaborations, thanks to FreeRange 2011, Metro Arts’ national creative development incubator for new performance work. It’s an investment in experimentation where the outcomes are far from guaranteed. In fact, artists can feel free to fail.

‘We’re wanting people to really go to the edges,’ says Liz Burcham, CEO of Metro Arts. It’s about risk. Now in its sixth year, FreeRange deliberately commits to projects that are at a very early development stage. Over the years it has supported many established and emerging performance artists and works such as ‘the escapists’ boy girl wall and Often I find that I am naked.
