What does your family life say about you?

Keeping work and family life separate may well be the key to success, but what message does your family life send your employers?

When an employer asks you to tell them about yourself, discussing your family life is one of the things you may decide to expand on. It’s important to remember that you are under no obligation to reveal more than you wish, but if you do decide to tell them the whole story, it’s worth noting that certain aspects may be scrutinised to determine whether you will make a good candidate for the job they want you for.

Some employers may have concerns when they find out that you have someone depending on you – be it young children or elderly parents. Unfair as it is, employers might worry that this will prohibit you from being easily able to travel or work overtime at short notice. On a more positive note, having a close-knit family could also tell your employer that you’re probably a well-adjusted individual who knows a lot about responsibility.
