You’d think that the head of a major writers festival would’ve been inspired to undertake a career in literature after a revelatory reading of Dostoyevsky or Faulkner, but for Melbourne Writers Festival Director Steve Grimwade it was spoken word featuring hip hop artists and punk rockers that drew him in.

CAREER ADVICE: We’re told the bell tolls for journalism. Newspaper circulation is down across the globe, newsroom floors are running with the blood of retrenched journalists, the GFC demolished advertising revenues and now a lot of people, some would argue the majority, have turned to aggregated online stories to get their news.
CAREER ADVICE: Lots of people throw the term ‘the arts’ around – “I’m working in the arts” “I’m an arts worker” or “I’d like a career in the arts”. But what does this actually mean? If you know you want to work in a creative field, here are a few ways to narrow down your interests and get yourself on the path to paid work.

QUEENSCLIFF MUSIC FESTIVAL: There’ll be barbeques going backstage, international and local bands playing at 13 different venues including on a steam train, circus workshops for the kids, markets and a lot of people staying in tents as the 14th Queenscliff Music Festival takes over the town at the end of the month.
AUSTRALIA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS - ARTSTART: Trent Suidgeest needed money to get known, a WAPA theatrical lighting designer graduate, he needed a brand, a logo and in order to develop a sustainable career he needed to travel from Perth to the east coast to make contacts and develop a strong network. He got money for that.
