$1000 grants now open to artists and arts workers

A group of arts and culture philanthropists have united to create 1,400 quick turnaround grants to artists in need.

Philanthropy Australia’s Arts Funders Network has moved quickly to create their National Assistance Program for the Arts, collectively donating $1.4 million worth of support for individual artists and arts workers left behind by government funding. But with applications closing on Sunday 10 May, artists will need to get in quick.

The program will distribute 1,400 one-off grants of $1,000 on the basis of need, experience, and talent with the alumni of the Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship program to assessing applications. To ensure a quick turnaround, applications will be based on online material including an arts practice website, LinkedIn page or other web-based evidence of an artistic career. Applications will be open to all disciplines with successful artists notified the week beginning 11 May.

‘The program is for artists and arts workers who can’t access JobKeeper or their employers can’t access JobKeeper. So it’s for that portion of the sector who is really feeling the pinch,’ said Neal Harvey, Chair of Philanthropy Australia’s Arts Funders Network.

‘It’s remarkable that you can get a group of philanthropists around the country to coordinate efforts in this way, but the fact that they’re able to do so is testament to their commitment and their desire to help artists at this time.’

The Network is coordinating the distribution of philanthropic funds with the assistance of Creative Partnerships Australia Australian Cultural Fund into the Australian arts sector, via a one-off National Assistance Program for the Arts.

Applications for the National Assistance Program for the Arts open on 7 May and close 10 May. The Sidney Myer Foundation website has more information on how to apply and eligibility including FAQs and other sources of funding.
