As Producer (First Nations Theatre), you’ll collaborate with the Head of First Nations Theatre, artists and creatives, to support First Nations theatre productions from development through to performance on stage.

We’re searching for an imaginative and organised First Nations Producer to join our First Nations Theatre team. This is your opportunity to play a role in the development and delivery of compelling First Nations stories that reflect the richness of First Nations storytelling and connect with audiences and communities.

This is an identified First Nations position.  Queensland Theatre considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position.

Queensland Theatre has a strategic commitment to the development of a distinct, self-determined First Nations Theatre Program through the establishment of a First Nations Theatre team that leads the development of First Nations creative practice and a First Nations theatre program, building creative capacity and pathways for First Nations storytellers, artists and creatives through meaningful opportunities and experiences.

Role snapshot

The Producer (First Nations Theatre) is a member of the First Nations Theatre team and will work with the Head of First Nations Theatre in the delivery of a distinctive First Nations artistic program, bringing together First Nations playwrights and artists, exploring ideas and collaborating with a community of First Nations artists and companies.  As Producer (First Nations Theatre), you will work with First Nations artists and creatives to bring meaningful productions to life. The role requires someone with:

  • an understanding of the lifecycle of work and how stories move from idea to play and from development through to production;
  • strong relationships in the performing arts industry who is passionate about First Nations voices and stories on stage; and
  • strong communication skills with an ability to recognise diverse needs and expectations.

Objectives include:

  • Providing producing support for First Nations artistic works and activities (from concept to stage);
  • Cultivating and sustaining external relationships with First Nations artists and arts organisations;
  • Facilitating engagement with the First Nations artistic community.

Experience producing performing arts is essential along with cultural competency.

This is a full-time position. It requires flexibility given the nature of the position and its responsibilities and the sector in which we operate, and operational demands, including some reasonable additional hours from time-to-timeat performances/season productions.

This role is suited to someone who is highly motivated, is able to manage the requirements of a diverse operational environment and who will enjoy being involved in theatre making and the arts.

Work location  This role can be based at Queensland Theatre office, 78 Montague Road, South Brisbane or in Cairns.

Who we are looking for 

To be successful in this role, you will have the following:-

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a First Nations producing role, with a broad understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts practices and a commitment to making a positive impact in the Indigenous arts community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and a connection with, the broad First Nations artistic community with an ability to foster effective relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with an ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to juggle competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Collaborative and flexible working style with the ability to work effectively as a team player as well as independently, in a hands-on capacity.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
