Head of Production

Take the lead on production and technical delivery for WA's State Theatre Company.

Black Swan is Western Australia’s State theatre company. Resident at the State Theatre Centre of WA, our purpose is to create exceptional, high-quality theatre that speaks to the world from our unique WA culture, landscape and moment in time.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Production to lead the production and technical management of our productions and events, playing a critical role in delivering ambitious, high-quality theatre on time, on budget and to the highest production values.

At Black Swan, the Head of Production translates creative vision into safely delivered, exceptional theatre – leading planning, budgeting, scheduling and the day-to-day management of our workshop, wardrobe and production teams.

About the role

Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Production provides leadership in every aspect of the production and technical management of Black Swan’s productions and events, with a significant planning, human resource, scheduling and budget management focus.

Working closely with the CEO, the Artistic Director and other department managers, you will:

• Lead production budgeting, scheduling and technical planning across each annual season, including bump-ins, bump-outs and production meetings

• Oversee the operations of the wardrobe and workshop, ensuring high productivity, quality and safety

• Manage and develop the production team – including the Production Operations Manager, Wardrobe Coordinator, Technical Manager and Head Mechanist – to build a high-performing, collaborative culture

• Build and maintain excellent working relationships with venues, co-producing partners and suppliers across WA, nationally and internationally

This role requires both strategic planning and hands-on delivery, working closely with a small but highly skilled production and technical team.

About you

You are an experienced production leader with a strong track record in professional theatre production management. You bring:

• 5 or more years’ experience in a similar role in a performing arts producing company

• Demonstrated knowledge of all technical aspects of professional theatre production, including set and costume builds and negotiation with creative teams

• Demonstrated experience effectively managing production budgets and schedules

• Excellent working knowledge of relevant awards and legislation, including the Performers’ Collective Agreement, Live Performance Award, and Occupational Health and Safety requirements

• Proven experience leading small teams in a fast-moving, creative environment, with excellent communication and relationship management skills

A valid C class Western Australian (or equivalent) driver’s licence is essential for this role. Knowledge of the Western Australian performing arts environment is highly regarded.
