General Manager ✦ Co-Working Space
✦ MASS ✦ - General Manager Needed. A new co-working space for Game Developers designed by Flack Studio. Supported by Creative Victoria and VicScreen.
MASS ✦ GENERAL MANAGER ✦
MASS · Collingwood, Melbourne · On-site · Full-Time
HELLO! MASS is a brand-new coworking space for the people who make video games. We’re built by Massive Monster – the studio behind Cult of the Lamb, one of the most successful indie games of the last few years – with support from Creative Victoria & VicScreen. The space is design-led and purpose-built in collaboration with Flack Studio, one of Australia’s most celebrated interior design studios. We’re opening our doors soon and looking for someone who can run the space, foster a community, and help build a soon-to-be globally recognized place.
You do not need to have worked in games to be brilliant at this job. If you’ve run a venue, a studio, a café, a gallery, a members’ club, an events space or a small business – and you love bringing people together – we want to hear from you. What matters most is that you’re a great host and operator who’s genuinely excited to learn our world.
✶ THE ROLE
We’re looking for a General Manager who believes in MASS’s mission to be a place for creation, who can bring a creative community together, and who has a commercial mindset. The role covers day-to-day operations, looking after members, and pursuing business development opportunities for the space.
You’ll be there from day one, helping establish a one-of-a-kind space – a unique opportunity to design how it runs from the ground up, and to build the home for Melbourne’s best game developers.
You’ll commence as the sole employee, with the support of company director Julian Wilton from Massive Monster. MASS is designed to offer affordable desks for its residents, so it runs a lean operation. There may be room for additional support as the space fills and further revenue-generating opportunities are pursued.
✶ WHAT YOU’LL ACTUALLY BE DOING
Community & Resident Experience
- Looking after residents’ day-to-day needs – you love meeting new people and bringing people together.
- Creating and fostering a community through events, socials and partnerships. You’ll bring the space alive and make it a place people want to be.
- Creating and owning the whole journey, from welcoming a new resident to farewelling them, so the experience is always great.
- Filling the space and keeping it full, while thoughtfully building the right mix of residents.
- Being a warm front-of-house presence while balancing everything happening behind the scenes.
Events Management
- Handling external bookings for meeting rooms and events.
- Assisting with event setup, packdown and logistics as required.
Operations & Commerciality
- Keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly – facilities management, repairs, maintenance and more.
- Distributing and managing mail and courier deliveries.
- Promoting MASS news and events through social media and newsletters, with support from the Massive Monster team.
- Overseeing budget planning and keeping financial targets on track, reporting and discussing key findings with the support of the company director and accountant.
- Engaging with external stakeholders such as government (VicScreen, Creative Victoria), partners, education and more.
✶ WHO ARE YOU?
- You’ve run a space, a venue, a studio or a business before – you’ve worn all the hats.
- You’ve got a great eye for detail and design, and you’ll keep MASS shining.
- You’ve thrown and hosted events for communities before, with an emphasis on experience.
- You’re happy running the show while working with a director and other stakeholders.
- You love connecting people and building community.
- You can get into the numbers, making sure MASS is meeting its revenue goals.
- You can solve problems and put out fires without oversight.
- You’re handy on the tech side – you learn new software quickly and use it to streamline your workflow.
✶ BONUS POINTS (genuinely optional – not having these won’t count against you)
- A background in coworking, hospitality, events or venue management.
- Experience in graphic design and art.
- A love of interior design and architecture.
- Some understanding of the video games world and what developers need – or a real willingness to learn.
- Familiarity with Melbourne’s creative or games community.
- You live close to Collingwood.
✶ WHY MASS
- Be part of our mission to give Melbourne’s game makers a home.
- Work alongside the studio that made Cult of the Lamb, Massive Monster.
- Ownership & autonomy – you’ll shape how this place runs from day one and be the face of MASS.
- Work in genuinely the most beautiful coworking space you’ve ever seen.
- Performance incentives for business development and filling the space:
- 10% commission on externally sourced funds or hardware.
- Occupancy bonuses based on quarterly goals.
MASS welcomes all. If you think you could be great at this, we’d love to hear from you – even if you don’t tick every box.
