THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and operations of WAMA, providing dynamic leadership and strategic direction to the overall organisation.

Reporting directly to WAMA’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director’s primary role is to establish WAMA as Australia’s National Centre for Environmental Art and develop the art and wildlife precinct to be of international standing. This includes operationalising the new site, managing the building and exhibition spaces within the gallery, and overseeing all aspects of policymaking, planning, organisation, staffing, marketing, finance, fundraising, and operations.

The successful candidate will build and lead a small team in the delivery of our exhibitions and public programs, care for our art collection, and foster partnerships with government, local businesses, community organisations, schools, and universities.

The role will also involve refining and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program, cultivating relationships with potential donors, and securing funding for our exhibitions and programs.

WAMA is seeking someone with an enthusiasm for art and the environment with a minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience, preferably within the arts or cultural sector. They will have a strong knowledge of contemporary and historic art, Australia’s natural environment and cultural institutions. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills are essential, as is a relevant degree or qualifications and extensive experience.

ABOUT WAMA:

WAMA aims to be Australia’s National Centre for Environmental Art, located at the foot of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park.

The centrepiece is a world-class gallery that has been created to inspire and enrich, providing the foundation for a new cultural precinct that is not simply a new space for art. WAMA is a completely unique combination of art, natural science, Australian flora and fauna.

The WAMA Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation jointly funded by the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund, private philanthropy and donations.
