The Opportunity
Moonee Valley City Council is seeking an experienced and dynamic arts professional to lead the Incinerator Gallery and Visual Arts program during an exciting period of review and renewal. This leadership role sits within the Arts Unit and plays a key part in delivering Council’s arts and culture strategy, Igniting Creativity in Moonee Valley 2023–2027. The position will guide the future direction of the Incinerator Gallery while ensuring the continued delivery of a high-quality exhibition and public art program. You will lead a passionate team, oversee gallery operations, drive innovative programming, and strengthen community engagement with visual arts across the municipality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the review and future planning of Incinerator Gallery operations, ensuring alignment with community needs, strategic priorities and financial sustainability.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Gallery, ensuring a high standard of customer service, accessibility and responsiveness.
- Curate and deliver a compelling annual exhibition program and associated public programs that increase attendance and engagement.
- Manage and develop a high-performing team, fostering a positive, collaborative and outcomes-driven culture.
- Lead the delivery of public art projects and programs across the municipality, including capital works and maintenance of Council’s art collection.
- Develop and manage operational and capital budgets, including reporting, forecasting and identifying opportunities for growth and efficiency.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with artists, arts organisations, stakeholders and the broader community.
- Contribute strategic advice, planning and continuous improvement initiatives across the Arts Unit.
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and strategic leader with demonstrated experience in a visual arts or cultural organisation, supported by tertiary qualifications in visual/fine arts, curatorial or museum studies, arts management, or a related field (or equivalent experience). You will bring strong expertise in gallery operations, exhibition curation and public art delivery, along with advanced project management and financial management skills, including the oversight of complex operational and capital budgets. Your ability to lead and develop teams, drive continuous improvement, and deliver high-quality programs will be complemented by a deep understanding of contemporary arts practice and audience engagement. Strong interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills are essential, as is your ability to build effective relationships with artists, stakeholders and the community, and to operate confidently within a local government environment.
