Writing NSW

Communications and Projects Officer

We are seeking a creative and highly organised Communications and Projects Officer to coordinate our marketing and project activities.

Writing NSW is the state’s leading provider of support for writers. We offer courses, workshops, writing groups, grants, prizes and a wide range of resources for writers at all stages of their careers. Based in beautiful Callan Park in Sydney’s Inner West, we are a small, collaborative, purpose-driven not-for-profit, working to strengthen the writing community across the state.

We are seeking a creative and highly organised Communications and Projects Officer to coordinate our communications and marketing activities while supporting the delivery of competitions, events and special projects.

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will manage Writing NSW’s digital communications, including social media, email marketing and website content; create and implement promotional campaigns; analyse communications performance; and help coordinate a range of events, competitions and community initiatives. This is a varied, hands-on role that combines creativity, relationship-building and project coordination.

What We Offer

  • Flexible, part-time hours (0.8 FTE / 4 days per week)
  • Hybrid working, with the option to work from home one day per week
  • Additional paid leave during the end-of-year shutdown
  • A generous time-in-lieu policy
  • Free access to a number of Writing NSW courses and workshops
  • A supportive, creative, mission-driven environment in beautiful parklands

About the Role

  • Develop and deliver communications and marketing campaigns across digital channels
  • Create engaging content for social media, email newsletters and the Writing NSW website
  • Coordinate the weekly Newsbite e-newsletter and other email marketing campaigns
  • Monitor and report on communications performance and audience engagement
  • Build relationships with writers, partners, media and industry stakeholders
  • Support the planning and delivery of Writing NSW events, festivals, talks and special projects
  • Coordinate writing competitions, including administration, judges and participant communications
  • Maintain event calendars, webpages and promotional materials
  • Assist with funding applications, reporting and project administration
  • Provide excellent customer service to Writing NSW members, participants and the broader writing community

About You

You are an excellent communicator who enjoys telling stories, building audiences and making things happen. You are comfortable switching between creative communications work and practical project coordination, and you enjoy working as part of a small team with a broad range of responsibilities.

You may have experience in communications, marketing, events, publishing, arts administration, community engagement or project coordination. You are organised, proactive and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects at once.

An interest in literature, writing and the arts is highly desirable.

We welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds, including communications, marketing, publishing, arts administration, events, community engagement and project coordination.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing, including creating and managing content across digital platforms such as social media and email marketing, and producing visual marketing materials using Canva or similar design software.
  • Strong project coordination and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and deliver projects, events or programs effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write engaging content for a range of audiences and build positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong administrative and analytical skills, including attention to detail, record-keeping, reporting and the ability to use data and insights to inform decision-making.
  • An interest in and understanding of the writing, publishing, literary or broader arts and cultural sector, and a commitment to supporting writers and creative communities.
  • How to Apply

Applications close Friday 10 July 2026.
