Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra

Director of Orchestra Management

One of Australia's great orchestras is seeking an exceptional leader to join its Executive Team across all aspects of orchestra and artistic operation

Are you deeply committed to enabling orchestras and musicians to perform at their very best every day? Do musicians trust you to provide calm, strategic leadership amidst complex environments? Does the prospect of living amidst the hallmarks of life in Lutruwita/Tasmania — national parks, extraordinary food, culture and the arts — appeal? Are you ambitious to contribute to a vibrant future for music in Australia?

Then this role could be ideal for you.

The Opportunity

Following the retirement of a long-serving Director, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is seeking an exceptional leader to join its Executive Team. This is a rare opportunity to shape the operational heart of one of Australia’s great orchestras.

The TSO is celebrated for its artistic brilliance, collaborative culture and deep connection to its community. The incoming Director will partner closely with the CEO and the full leadership team to deliver an outstanding orchestral programme and to champion the wellbeing and professional lives of the TSO’s musicians.

About the Role

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Orchestra Management provides strategic and operational leadership across all aspects of orchestra and artistic operations.  For full details, please request a Candidate Information Pack from [email protected].

About You

We are looking for a leader whose background, skills and character align with the TSO’s culture and ambitions. You will bring:

  • Proven senior leadership experience in orchestral or performing arts management
  • A collaborative, open and empowering leadership style
  • A genuine understanding of and passion for orchestral music and the professional lives of musicians
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills — you earn trust naturally
  • Strategic thinking balanced with strong operational capability
  • Sound financial and contractual literacy, including experience with enterprise agreements
  • Resilience, good humour and the ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure
  • A commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in all its forms

Applicants may come from diverse professional backgrounds. We value cultural fit highly — and for the TSO, that means collaborative leadership, genuine artistic empathy, excellent people skills and a good sense of humour.
