About Beleura House and Garden
Beleura is an 1865 Italianate-style villa located in Mornington, Victoria. It was built on the traditional lands of the Boon Wurrung/Bunurong people for James Butchart, a stock and station agent who created a thriving and prosperous business during the Victorian Gold Rush.
The last owner and resident, composer John Tallis, left the property in 1996 to a Foundation to make Beleura accessible to the public.
Beleura is presented as a house museum with a primary collection on display in the main House. A small gallery in our visitor centre hosts a changing exhibition related to Beleura’s many stories. Our research centre includes specialist photography collections in theatre heritage and costume design as well as a dedicated ceramic collection.
The property is operated by the Tallis Foundation as an historic house museum and garden open to the public on pre-booked tours and for regularly scheduled concerts and other events.
