Abstract Connotations is an exhibition where I explore our connections with the natural environment, human nature and our interactions with the natural environment. I find that in contemporary societies, we are faced with rapid changes due to the advancement of technology and social change.

In concept, I allow the simplicity of everyday thoughts and experiences to inspire the paintings. The process can be quite dynamic between contemplation and the use of colour, form and tone, along with the fluidity of paint with various forms of mark making.

The intent of the exhibition is to inspire respect for our common humanity and further explore our capacity to relate to one another. Secondly, to explore the beauty and the power of our natural environment. I try to imagine ways of living harmoniously with each other, amongst our own creations, in the awe-inspiring natural environment we inhabit.

About the Artist

Brian Hincksman has always had a connection to the arts in some way or form. Firstly, with music bands and writing songs, but always with painting and drawing.

Finding a need to address the latter, he moved to Canberra to attend the ANU School of Art in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After graduating, he began to have a number of exhibitions both locally and interstate with solo and group shows.

He was also writing poetry and began performing them with musicians and had some published. Brian also designed theatre sets, allowing him to enjoy many aspects of a strong and vibrant Canberra arts community.

However, his main focus still remained with painting exhibitions, which involve philosophy and the realising of ideas in the context of developing an abstract visual language.
