‘The need to make work keeps me going’

Physical theatre artist Debra Batton has had a long and varied career. ArtsHub spoke with Batton about her career journey, the lessons she has learnt, and the philosophy behind her art-making.

Working across disciplines, Debra Batton’s career has been as varied as her practice.

As a celebrated physical theatre performer, Batton was the Director of Australian company Legs on the Wall from 2002 to 2009, though she first started performing with the company in 1996. Going on to teach at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), she then began touring internationally as a circus performer with Circus Oz, before branching out and creating her own physical theatre work.
