Getting to grips with cultural participation in the arts

If we want to see more culturally diverse audiences and artists, we have to develop hands on – not token – engagement with CALD communities.

Australians as a whole are becoming more culturally diverse, as illustrated by the recently released 2016 census figures. Between 2011 and 2016, the total number of people living in Australia who were born overseas rose from 24.6% to 26.3% – more than one in four.

Richard Watts is ArtsHub's National Performing Arts Editor; he also presents the weekly program SmartArts on Three Triple R FM, and serves as the Chair of La Mama Theatre's volunteer Committee of Management.
