The Tim Winton Award for Young Writers turns 20 in 2012. The overall winner will be featured in an anthology celebrating the anniversary. The anthology is the third on a series of publications that put in print between the covers of a book the best of the submissions over the years. The first two compilations were called Destination Unknown and Life Bytes.

John Curtin College of the Arts student Michelle Aitken received the outstanding achievement award in 2011 for her story Orwell’s Children. Her winning submission and other winners through the categories can be read here. Michelle also received first prize in the lower secondary category. Another John Curtin College of the Arts student, Sarah Hult, was awarded third prize. John Curtin College of the Arts principal Mitch Mackay said the girls’ awards were amazing achievements because they were judged the best among 1400 other entries. “For two girls who didn’t think their stories were worthy because they had read them so much and were a bit detached from them, this competition puts in perspective where they compare with others,” he said.”
