Nicky Schonkala’s textiles poised between art and craft

Founding member of Watch This Space artists-run experimental artspace in Alice Springs Pip McManus opened the Common Threads – the junction of art and craft exhibition by Nicky Schonkala at the gallery in September last year with some acute observations about the binary nature of making textiles. Her introductory remarks were a perfect prelude to the complex nature of the exhibition and the ambitious extension of Schonkala’s work to involve other artists in other forms of creativity to provide further commentary on textiles as a medium of expression.
