Comedienne Julia Zemiro will take audiences on a wild romp as the host of a new series by SBS called Sex: An Unnatural History – premiering in July.
The show will chart the evolution of the sexual paradigm – from empowerment to fetishism – with a special focus on society’s changing attitudes towards sex. It will feature a kaleidoscope of experts, scientists, historians and enthusiasts alike.
The examination begins in 1961 with the invention of the contraceptive pill, which altered human biology and as a result triggered changes in the sexual and social landscape. Sex could now be purely for gratification, rather than procreation, and as humans and society have continued to evolve, the documentary questions whether our obsession with sex has become unnatural.
Examining these social changes, as well as ‘deviant’ and often concealed sexual behaviours (adultery, bestiality, pornography); the continuing sexualisation of fashion images in the media; and the Catholic church’s refusal to adapt to the times questions if what we have come to accept as ‘normal’ can really be classified as such. Each episode is a mini-essay on the given topic.
Premiering Friday 29th July at 10pm, the six-part series will place Zemiro in some sticky situations and she’ll rub shoulders with nudists, feminists and ‘sexperts’.
According to the SBS the documentary series features, “Insightful facts, solid social and scientific commentary and a touch of cheek make Sex: An Unnatural History a captivating ride”.
