Fiona Lowry today was announced the winner of the 2014 Archibald Prize – but was it really a surprise?
Fiercely contested from a field of 54 finalists, Lowry’s portrait of doyenne of the art world Penelope Seidler was a hot favourite. ‘We had an extremely high calibre this year. We had to be extremely ruthless,’ said the President of the Gallery’s Board of Trustees, Guido Belgiorno-Nettis.
