WA-based artist Cameron Richards has proven that creative dreams can come true without having a formal art qualification.
Richards, a gifted painter who has a qualification in physiotherapy, has used painting as a creative outlet and has now beaten a collection of 38 finalists to win the 2020 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award worth $50,000.
His painting titled Miss Priya Premkumar attracted the attention of the National Portrait Gallery Director and guest judge, Karen Quinlan, who made the announcement during a live stream.
