As a young academic I used to think that academic writing was just like graffiti: illegible, cultish and ripe with hidden meaning. I thought attacks on academic thinking were just a reflection of a rampant Australian anti-intellectualism which meant I should be living in Paris.  A eureka moment came when I realised that my own academic thinking was actually painful to non-academic readers.
