For small productions, the cost of a venue can be the biggest barrier to getting a show up. For audiences, the overheads of running a theatre are a big chunk of ticket costs.

But it hasn’t always been that way. Salon performances were the bread-and-butter for many European musicians in the 19th Century. Chamber music gets its name from the fact that it was performed in smallish rooms -albeit often in palaces – not concert halls.
