Published posthumously, Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding the Man is a remarkable and passionate tribute to his lover of 15 years, John Caleo, who died of an AIDS-related illness on Australia Day 1992.
Melburnian Chris Gill was in the year below Conigrave and Caleo, and has very different memories of his time at Xavier. Now working at the Sentencing Advisory Council, Gill said: ‘Reading the book I can recall thinking it was almost like they were at a different school because their experience at school, or at least Tim’s, was so much different to my own.
