Cultural capitals: Melbourne

With its famous laneway graffiti, dense commercial gallery scene and UNESCO City of Literature title, Melbourne likes to claim it is The Cultural Capital of Australia. In the latest in out Cultural Capitals series we assess the claim.

Arriving in Melbourne in late 2008, Brett Sheehy, Artistic Director, Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) was struck by how important arts and culture is to the fabric of the city.

As the only person to have been Artistic Director of three state capital festivals – Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide – Brisbane-raised Sheehy is in a unique position to judge.
