Dealing with those difficult and often unexpected questions in an interview is a skill in and of its own, but unfortunately it’s not one that many of us possess. Here’s some sample answers that might help you get through when you’re thrown a curve ball.

“Why were you out of work for so long?”: Long periods of unemployment may look bad on paper and in an interview you will often be called up to explain why. Tell your interviewer that you were taking your time to seriously consider your next move and holding out for the right position rather than jumping into a position that didn’t suit you. If the gap was to travel, explain how much you learned from your experience.
