The Theatre Royal in Hobart is Australia’s oldest working theatre and following construction of The Hedberg in 2019, it became one of the country’s newest performing arts centres.

The transition to new facilities at The Hedberg and a significant expansion of operations has been transformational, providing a platform for the Theatre Royal to play a much stronger leadership role in Tasmania’s  creative sector.

Our vision is based on a strategy of “opening up” – being more accessible and inclusive, offering different types of events, and activating the buildings in new and interesting ways. 

This vision has been instrumental in driving the innovation required to present a vibrant and compelling performing arts program, our responsiveness to the local creative sector, and new approaches to developing audiences and engaging communities in creative and cultural activity.

Our partnerships with festivals, events, and our close neighbours the University of Tasmania, have led to a unique range of projects that have activated our new facilities and the surrounding creative precinct, which includes the Federation Concert Hall and the TSO, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and another University campus at the Centre for the Arts on Hunter Street.

There’s a strong sense of possibility, and the Theatre Royal Management Board is seeking a CEO who can maintain the momentum while continuing to consolidate our long-term sustainability.

We have a wonderful, highly skilled team, and a supportive Board, all committed to our vision to be a vibrant centre of creativity and culture for all Tasmanians.
