Kira Kiro Artists is seeking a positive yet resilient arts worker to support their small art centre/project in the remote north west Kimberley in WA.
Arts and Projects Facilitator
The position of Arts and Projects Facilitator will support the cultural and economic aspirations of Kira Kiro Artists in Kalumburu. Kalumburu is a significantly remote community of approximately 500 people in the far north east Kimberley.
Primary responsibility of this position will be to support the coordination of all aspects of the Kira Kiro Artists Project in the remote community of Kalumburu including day to day operations, artist & community engagement, and facilitation of arts development activities to support the production of quality artworks and new skills development of artists. The position is supported and overseen by Waringarri Aboriginal Arts administration.
The successful applicant will demonstrate strong organizational capability, a passion for community cultural development principles, a commitment to supporting Indigenous success, and the ability to maintain professional standards in often very challenging circumstances.
The position reports to the Manager and Directors of Waringarri Aboriginal Arts and to the Kira Kiro Artists Advisory Group.
Background
Waringarri Aboriginal Arts is the first Aboriginal Art Centre established in Western Australia and one of the longest continuously operating art centres in the Australia. Established by Miriwoong and Gajerrabeng cultural leaders in the early 1980s the centre supports approximately 50 artists and employs 15 local Indigenous community members as arts-workers & tour guides. Waringarri operates artist studios, galleries selling ochre paintings, limited edition prints, traditional artefacts, textiles, ceramics and artist inspired merchandise.
Kira Kiro Artists has been operating since 2009 under the auspice of Waringarri Aboriginal Arts to develop professional skills and economic opportunities for Kalumburu artists and the community. The centre currently supports approximately 20 artists and employs a local Indigenous arts-worker. Kalumburu is the northern most community in Western Australia and home to approximately 500 people of Wunambal Gaambera, Kwini and Naranyin descent.

Employment Conditions:
The position is located in Kalumburu. A small furnished studio accommodation unit is available on site in Kalumburu adjacent to the Kira Kiro Artists centre at no cost. Respite arrangements fly in/fly out to Kununurra are available every six weeks at no cost for long weekend respite and to support supplies organization and supervision contact with Waringarri Aboriginal Arts.
- Salary $65,000 -$70,000 per annum depending on experience
- 12% Superannuation.
- Salary Sacrifice is available in accordance with tax regulations
- Annual Leave is 5 weeks
- Subsidised accommodation, annual travel bonus, use of 4WD vehicle, and re-location costs
- There will be an initial 3 month probation period
- Flexible arrangements may be negotiated for contract positions of less than 12 months

Selection Criteria:
- Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and a high degree of resilience and adaptability with demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal people
- The ability to multi-task, prioritize and work well under pressure within the challenges of an isolated community
- Experience in the day to day operations and technical requirements of an artists’ studio
- Current First Aid, Police Clearance & Working With Children Checks
- Current Australian Driver’s License (manual)
Highly Desirable in the following:
- Knowledge of contemporary and/or Indigenous art practice
- Experience in the facilitation of arts development and/or cultural programs
- Experience working in a remote Indigenous Community
- Experience in customer service with computer proficiency
- Experience working in the not-for-profit sector and/or philanthropic fundraising
