Instead of heading to a major festival in Sydney, Perth or Adelaide this summer, why not head off the beaten track?

While the critical masses of artists living and working in our major cities, coupled with the programming nous of our leading festival directors and their teams, results in often remarkable work, you don’t have to visit a capital city to have a fantastic arts experience. Across Australia, artists gather, dream, inspire and create – often in areas where you might not necessarily expect to find art happening en masse, such as in former steel cities and the country’s desert heart.

Richard Watts is ArtsHub's National Performing Arts Editor; he also presents the weekly program SmartArts on Three Triple R FM, and serves as the Chair of La Mama Theatre's volunteer Committee of Management. Richard is a life member of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, and was awarded the status of Melbourne Fringe Living Legend in 2017.
