Perth’s Friday night comedy scene is getting a new room, and this one is starting small in the best possible way.
Northbridge Comedy Club opens at Curate on James Street with a soft launch opening night featuring Jon Pinder, Xavier Susai, David Hughes, Roz Kiamko and more acts, bringing a tight showcase of live stand-up comedy into the middle of one of Perth’s busiest entertainment precincts.
Presented by Grassroots Comedy, the new weekly room is designed for people searching for what to do in Perth on a Friday night, what’s on in Perth on a Friday night, or simply a good reason to get into Northbridge before the weekend properly kicks off. The show starts at 7pm, making it an easy first stop before dinner, drinks, late-night plans, or a wander through the city.
The concept is simple: a small room, a strong line-up, and a Friday night audience close enough to feel every punchline land. With only 30 seats, Northbridge Comedy Club is not trying to be a giant theatre show. It is intimate, immediate and built around the kind of comedy that works best when the audience is right there with the performers.
Opening night brings together a mix of familiar Perth comedy names and seasoned acts. Jon Pinder is one of the most reliable headliners working in Western Australia, with the kind of stage presence that can settle a room within seconds. David Hughes brings a dry, playful style that has made him a regular across Perth comedy rooms. Xavier Susai, founder of Grassroots Comedy, adds the restless energy of a performer who has spent years building rooms as well as performing in them. Roz Kiamko joins the bill as part of a line-up that gives the night a loose, lively opening-night feel.
For anyone who has followed comedy in Perth, the arrival of Northbridge Comedy Club feels like a natural next step for Grassroots Comedy. The group has built a regular presence across the city with shows including Leederville Comedy Club, the Saturday One Hour Comedy Show upstairs at The Leederville Hotel; Experimental Comedy Club, the Tuesday night Northbridge room where comedians test fresh material; and Cap Off Comedy at the Bassendean Hotel, a Monday night comedy showcase with a community fundraising angle.
Grassroots Comedy has also been active during Fringe World, including shows at the DoubleTree Hilton in Northbridge, where comedy audiences have gathered in the Jarrah and Banksia rooms during festival season. Northbridge Comedy Club takes that same city-centre energy and turns it into a weekly Friday night option outside the Fringe calendar.
That is the useful thing about this room. It is not a once-a-year festival gamble or a huge night that needs planning weeks in advance. It is a regular Friday night comedy show in Northbridge, close to bars, restaurants, public transport and the rest of the city’s after-work crowd. It gives Perth audiences another reliable answer to the weekly question: what’s on in Perth this Friday night?
The format is built as a showcase, which means the line-up can change from week to week. Some nights may feature local favourites. Other nights may include touring comics passing through Perth, national acts working on new material, or surprise drop-ins looking for a small room with a proper crowd. The opening night sets the tone: curated, relaxed, funny and close enough that no one gets lost at the back.
Curate is a fitting home for it. Sitting on James Street in Northbridge, it gives the show a clean Friday night rhythm: arrive early, grab a drink, watch an hour of live stand-up, then decide where the night goes next. For date nights, after-work drinks, group catch-ups or people who just want a low-effort night out with actual entertainment, it fills a very useful gap.
Perth has no shortage of places to eat, drink and drift around on a Friday. What Northbridge Comedy Club adds is a clear starting point. A ticket, a seat, a show, and a room full of people who came out for the same reason.
