Syntax and Style: How Structure Drives Thought
Syntax is more than just a set of grammatical rules: it is the very structure through which thought takes form on the page. This talk will explore the relationship between syntax and style by considering how linguistic structure influences clarity, tone, and meaning.
Through practical examples, we will examine how structure can direct a reader’s attention, create momentum and coherence, and make complex ideas easier to follow. We will see that writing well is not simply about expressing fully formed thoughts, but about using structure to communicate with precision, force, and style.
Iain is a Lecturer in Linguistics at Macquarie University, where he pursues his research interests on generative syntax and language acquisition. His work examines how people learn and use complex systems of linguistic knowledge, with particular attention to the principles underlying linguistic structure and language development. He uses this framework to consider how insights from linguistic theory can inform writing pedagogy, particularly by clarifying how linguistic structure contributes to written expression.
