Known as the popular alternative to the esteemed Archibald and Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Salon des Refusés features work not selected for the official exhibition but rather those recognised for their quality, diversity and experimentation, offering insight into contemporary art practices, different approaches to portraiture and responses to the Australian landscape.
Salon des Refusés was initiated by the S.H. Ervin Gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered in the Archibald Prize that were not selected for display in the official exhibition. The Salon – which takes its name from the renegade French Impressionists of the 1860s who held a breakaway exhibition from the French Academy – is the ‘alternative’ selection to the official Archibald and Wynne Prize selections at the Art Gallery of NSW. The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s most high profile and respected awards which attracts hundreds of entries each year and the S.H. Ervin Gallery’s ‘alternative’ selection has become a much-anticipated feature of the Sydney scene.
