Amongst this town’s live entertainment scene, support and solidarity shines brightly for one of its own. Courtney Murphy, a household name since his charming debut on Australian Idol nearly two decades ago, has long been the pride of Perth. The local legend, known for his infectious enthusiasm and proud representation of Western Australia, faces a daunting new challenge far removed from the glittering lights of TV studios.

Earlier this year, Murphy received a heart-wrenching diagnosis of advanced stage bowel cancer. The news sent ripples through the local community, reaching the ears of his long-time friend and fellow comedian, Luke Bolland. Moved by Murphy’s situation and the impact it would have on his young family, Bolland knew something significant had to be done.

In a remarkable display of camaraderie and quick action, Bolland collaborated with Grassroots Comedy to organise a comedy event titled “Comedy for Courtney”. Offering up their May 25th schedule at the Dark Horse Comedy Club, This special fundraiser is not just a testament to Murphy’s impact on those around him but also a shining example of the close-knit fabric of the Perth entertainment community.

The line-up curated for the night is nothing short of stellar, handpicked by Bolland to ensure an unforgettable evening. Headlining the event is Perth’s very own musical comedy maestro, Matt Storer. Known for his award-winning humour and viral online comedy clips, Storer’s participation is a perfect nod to Murphy’s musical talents and charismatic stage presence.

Joining him will be Ben Sutton, a UK comedian who has made Perth his home, charming audiences for nearly two decades with his quick-witted storytelling and cheeky humour. Mick Gledhill, another highlight of the evening, brings not only his Aussie larrikin wit to the stage but also a profound personal resonance as a cancer survivor. Rounding out the impressive roster is Aves Robins, a fresh and dynamic talent who recently represented Western Australia at the National Raw Comedy finals.

What makes “Comedy for Courtney” particularly poignant is the generosity of spirit shown by all involved. Each comedian has volunteered their time, ensuring that all profits raised from the event goes directly to support Murphy and his family during this challenging time.

As Perth’s comedy elite take to the stage, they stand in solidarity with Courtney Murphy, proving that sometimes, the best medicine truly is laughter.
