Shari Nye’s practice is grounded in a sustained engagement with the natural environment. Through field trips, direct observation and time spent in diverse landscapes, she develops paintings that respond to the specificity, atmosphere and energy of place.

Working predominantly in oil and abstraction, Nye is drawn to the medium’s capacity for depth, subtlety and slow layering. Her paintings move between observation and memory, conveying not only her interpretation of the landscape but also the sense of immersion and reverence it inspires.

Raised in Eltham, Melbourne, with early connections to the bush and the artistic community at Montsalvat, Nye began painting and working in ceramics as a teenager. After establishing a successful ceramic practice, she went on to study at Monash University, RMIT, Latrobe Street College of Art, the Art Students League of New York and the University of Melbourne.

Her ceramic works are held in public and private collections internationally, while her paintings have received awards and been acquired by private and corporate collections. Now based in Warrnambool, Victoria, Nye paints full-time and directs the Warrnambool School of Art, where she continues to teach and contribute to the local creative community.
