Audrey Gibbs joined the Royal Queensland Art Society in 1983 and was recognised as a Fellow of the society in 2009. This exhibition explores genre artworks, one of Audrey’s great pleasures. Sponsored by the Gibbs family, it will also feature a retrospective of some of her works.
For this exhibition, artists are required to focus on genre artworks. These are artworks are that depict ordinary people in everyday situations, both in the exterior and the interior. Rather than heroic or mythological subjects, these works celebrate the familiar: everyday people participating in domestic routines, work, leisure, social gatherings, and quiet moments of daily life. Spanning centuries, the show highlights how artists have found beauty, humour, and meaning in the ordinary, offering intimate windows into human experience and social history.
