Book editor Linda Martin’s new release, ‘A Tale of Two Publishing Houses’ (Fremantle Press), tells a story of human lives woven together, and sometimes torn apart, through the publishing industry. In this work of creative nonfiction, Linda weaves biography, memoir and history, and features interviews with key staff and authors from the establishment years at Fremantle Arts Centre Press. At the same time, and in real time, she tells the story of the co-establishment of her micro independent publishing house, Night Parrot Press.
Linda‘s presentation will look at early editing practices and operations of 1970s Fremantle Press, alongside today’s publishing industry practices. She will speak frankly about what it takes for an editor to start up a micro publishing house today, with all its highs and lows, and examine just why an editor might want to do it.
PRESENTER – Linda Martin
Linda Martin is a writer, editor and co-founder of Night Parrot Press. She has over twenty-five years’ experience working in the publishing industry – having edited at Fremantle Press, UWA Publishing and Magabala Books; holds a PhD in writing from ECU; and has lectured in publishing, writing and editing at most Perth universities. Her academic writing has been published in Westerly and Cordite Scholarly and her flash fiction has been published in international journals. She was a judge for the 2026 Dorothy Hewitt Award, the same year her creative nonfiction book, A tale of two publishing houses, was published by Fremantle Press.
