Since 2009, the NT Book Awards have been the premier prize for Northern Territory authors, celebrating excellence and originality in NT writing.
Rooted firmly in the peoples and places of the Northern Territory but reaching far beyond, the NT Book Awards recognise writers that reflect the immense richness and importance of the stories, cultures, and histories of the NT. With the exciting announcement of the 2026 NT Book Awards shortlist, the 2026 Judging Panel, comprised of Maree Yoelu, Kate Cuthbert and Leni Shilton, reflected on this year’s awards:
“What a joy it has been to read for these awards: the inclusivity and diversity of the books, the passion and talent of their writers. From science fiction to romantasy, poetry to plays, the entries cover an astonishing breadth and depth of story, and an enticing insight into what and who the Northern Territory is. This could not be more evident than through the large number of books that are written in, or included Indigenous languages; a unique reflection of the Territory’s cultural and linguistically diverse landscape.
We celebrate all the entries and encourage readers from around the country and the world to enjoy what is on offer.”
The winners of the 2026 NT Book Awards will be announced at the inaugural NT Writing Awards. Bringing together for the first time the Northern Territory’s three premier literary awards —the NT Book Awards, the NT History Book Award, and the NT Literary Awards — the ceremony celebrates outstanding literary talent and recognises excellence across published and unpublished writing.
Taking place in Garamilla | Darwin with a satellite event in Mparntwe | Alice Springs and streaming online, the NT Writing Awards will bring every corner of the NT together over an uplifting evening of entertainment and refreshments this September to honour the diverse voices, stories and histories that enrich the Northern Territory’s literary landscape.
