Philosophers Alain de Botton and John Armstrong have created the Art as Therapy program based on their approach that sees the purpose of art as improving the individual and society.

The philosophers have written interpretations for more than 60 works from the Gallery’s permanent collection based on their thesis that art has seven functions: Remembering, Hope, Sorrow, Rebalancing, Self-Understanding, Growth and Appreciation.
