Calling all Queensland based emerging and early career playwrights!
The Telescope New Writing Program supports emerging playwrights to make their big, bold and ambitious ideas a reality on stage. We commission writers to create daring, adventurous and imaginative stories, encouraging growth, learning and experimentation across the process. The program offers unique opportunities for writers to have their work seen by audiences and industry through a premiere production.
The program gives life to new plays that are daring, adventurous and imaginative in their style, form and themes. We encourage ideas that have strong potential and speak to our world today. We challenge writers to be brave and ‘go there’. The program supports them to create work that they may not be able to anywhere else.
Across the process, writers work with the Observatory Theatre team and associate artists, receiving high quality feedback, workshopping and creative development to grow the play to its full potential. The program culminates in a premiere production.
Playwrights will receive:
- A guaranteed fee to write a new play (to be negotiated)
- Public outcomes for the play, including a work-in-progress showing and a production season
- Box office royalties from the production season
- Frequent contact with an experienced dramaturg and regular feedback meetings
- Bespoke creative developments and workshops with associate artists, including actors
and directors - Invitations to internal company activities, productions, and other relevant opportunities
- Opportunities for partnerships Australia-wide to develop or present the new play, such as
residencies and co-productions - Fully coordinated by Observatory Theatre
Playwrights will need to be Queensland based and be available to work in Brisbane.
We are looking for early career playwrights who have not seen a significant production of their work. We favour applications from playwrights who have some experience writing full length works and have undergone professional study or training. We are looking for writers whom we can strike up collaborations with based on enthusiasm, curiosity, exploration, and a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in their craft.
