Hornsby Shire Council’s waste and sustainability art prize Remagine is now open for entries, with $11,000 in total prize money.

Hosted by Hornsby Shire Council in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society since 2009, the Remagine Art Prize challenges artists to create works in response to the waste and overconsumption crises. This year’s theme, Built to Expire, challenges artists to explore the highly problematic situation where many of the goods we now buy are literally built to expire – from phones and appliances to cars and everyday household items. This throwaway culture leads to more replacement costs, more energy used, more packaging required, and ultimately more waste.

Artists are invited to explore these issues and question why durability has been sacrificed for convenience, and how creativity can inspire change.

Entries will be open to the following categories: Digital Stills, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Ceramics, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Photography, with six prizes to be won in 2026, including:

  • Winner: $5,000
  • Highly Commended: $2,000
  • Recycled/Reused Materials Award $1,500
  • Local Artist Award: $1,000
  • Youth Award (18-25 years): $1,000
  • People’s Choice Award: $500

Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell said this year’s Remagine Art Prize is an opportunity for artists to challenge the throwaway mindset and spark fresh ideas for a more sustainable future.

“Art has the power to make us stop and think about the choices we make every day. I encourage artists to enter and use their creativity to inspire change in how we value and design the things we use.”

Entries to the Remagine Art Prize are now open and will close on Thursday 19 March 2026 at 4pm. The winners will be announced at the award ceremony on Friday 15 May 2026.

The Remagine Art Prize exhibition will be held from Friday 15 May until Sunday 31 May 2026, at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, 25 Edgeworth David Avenue, Hornsby.
