Narra Bukulla Artist in Residence 2026
The Narra Bukulla Artist in Residence offers a two-month, self-directed residency in Tanja, on Djiringanj Country, on the Far South Coast of New South Wales.
Now in its third year, the residency provides artists with time, space and a focused environment to engage deeply with their practice within a coastal bush landscape of spotted gum forest, waterways and nearby ocean headlands.
This opportunity supports a range of working approaches. Artists may arrive seeking immersion, reflection and process-led exploration, or with a clearly defined project to develop or bring to fruition. The residency is designed to be flexible and responsive to the needs of individual practices.
What is shared is a willingness to engage with place — to observe, return, and allow the experience of being here to inform the work in some way.
The residency is best suited to artists who are self-directed, able to work independently, and considerate within a shared living environment. It offers a balance of solitude and meaningful community connection.
Narra Bukulla is a remote, bush setting. Ease in outdoor environments — including the presence of wildlife such as snakes and spiders — and a sense of adaptability and openness to the experience are important.
The 2025 Artist in Residence, Margaret Hogan (Bathurst), described the experience as “a rare gift” and “the most challenging thing I’ve done”, resulting in a significant new body of work developed during her time at Narra Bukulla and exhibited during Sculpture Bermagui.
The residency includes:
— Two-month stay at Narra Bukulla
— Studio space
— Accommodation
— $2,500 artist stipend
— Community engagement (such as an Open Studio or workshop)
— Opportunity to exhibit during Sculpture Bermagui
Artists working across disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Narra Bukulla is a privately run, artist-led residency grounded in long-term engagement with place, community and creative practice.
